VMware has set forward its ambitions to tackle the telco cloud segment, using its Cross-Cloud Architecture and software-defined infrastructure offerings to appeal to the digital transformation conscious.

The team has promoted Shekar Ayyar to the newly created position of EVP and GM of the Telco Group, though he will continue his current role leading VMware’s strategy and corporate business development activities. This is not the first time the VMware business has rumbled towards the telco cloud segment, as Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell joined VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger on stage at VMworld 2016 to discuss the opportunities available for VMware in the NFV space.

“VMware is in a unique position to enable the transformational benefits of NFV for service providers “given its leadership position in virtualization technology,” said Gelsinger. “Shekar’s experience as a proven leader, with the right combination of knowledge and strategic thinking, will help expand VMware’s already strong foothold in the Telco market.”

More specifically the VMware is targeting digital transformation in the telco world. Numerous telcos around the world are aiming to combine network, cloud, mobility and IT architectures to accelerate innovation and launch new services faster, answering the challenges of the internet upstarts.

The team claim to offer organizations the opportunity to deploy a multi-vendor and multi-function NFV platform. VMware currently has more than 80 NFV production deployments as well as 24 certified virtual network functions from 20 vendors.
