Ericsson and TIM launch open 5G research initiative in Italy

A new initiative designed to create an open 5G R&D ecosystem has been launched in Italy by networking company Ericsson and operator TIM.

The ‘5G for Italy’ programme will aim to bring together public, private and academic organisations to not just develop the technology but also test 5G projects and services and conduct pilots for initiatives like smart city, IoT and Industry 4.0.

“This program allows us to develop the new network simultaneously to those services and applications that in the near future will be enabled by 5G for the digital transformation needs of Italian companies and the development of a new multi-media communication for the consumers,” said Mario Di Mauro, Head of Strategy & Innovation at TIM. “It is an important milestone that will transform the society with new business models and will enable citizens and businesses to leverage on 5G potential.”

“The two companies will work together with industries to understand their specific network requirements in order to realize the full benefits of 5G technologies,” said Nunzio Mirtillo, Head of Region Mediterranean, Ericsson. “TIM and Ericsson, by extending the program to key partners, will be able to test and give priority to those services and features that will become part of 5G networks in the near future, essential to accelerate country’s digitalization, also generating benefits for citizens, businesses and society.”

Elsewhere Ericsson announced a deal with Fox Networks Middle East to provide the playout for three new HD TV channels. Fox Action Movies, Fox Family Movies and FX will be broadcast from Ericsson’s broadcast and media services hub in Abu Dhabi, on top of the four Fox channels it already serves.

“Our global expertise and extensive experience in managing complex playout operations, combined with the local know-how of our Abu Dhabi based team, makes us the partner of choice for many TV and media organizations across the region,” said Thorsten Sauer, Head of Broadcast and Media Services at Ericsson. “We have a long and very positive relationship with Fox in several parts of the world, and we look forward to strengthening this further still in the years to come.”
